The Café Maure is the tea room of the Grande Mosquée de Paris, at 39 rue Geoffroy-Saint-Hilaire in the 5th arrondissement. It opens every day of the year from 9:00 to midnight, takes no reservations, and you do not need a mosque ticket to sit down: mint tea is listed at €2 on the operator’s own tariff. The restaurant next door serves couscous and tagines daily from 11:30, and the hammam behind it is open 10:00 to 21:00 and is reserved for women only.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n

Three separate businesses share one address here, and most English-language pages blur them together. This guide separates the tea room, the restaurant, the hammam and the mosque visit, with the hours, prices and entrances for each, all checked against the operator’s own site and the mosque’s own visitor page in August 2026.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

What is the Café Maure de la Mosquée de Paris?<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

The Café Maure is the tea room inside the Grande Mosquée de Paris complex, serving mint tea and North African pastries under blue-and-white zellige tilework, around a fig-shaded courtyard. It is one of three commercial spaces at the same address, alongside a full restaurant and a hammam, all run by the same operator and all independent of the mosque’s religious functions.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

You will see the place called several things, and they all point to the same courtyard: Café Maure, salon de thé de la Mosquée, La Mosquée, and Restaurant de la Mosquée de Paris. “Maure” is the French word for Moorish, and it describes the decorative style rather than a chain or a brand.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The pastries are the North African repertoire: cornes de gazelle, baklawa, makrout, and almond-and-honey cakes, taken with a glass of sweetened mint tea. The tea room does not serve full meals; for couscous, tagines, grillades, pastilla or keftas you move next door to the restaurant.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Is the Café Maure inside the Jardin des Plantes?<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

No. The complex sits at 39 rue Geoffroy-Saint-Hilaire, facing<\/em> the Jardin des Plantes across the street. The operator’s own restaurant page describes the site as “situé face au Jardin des Plantes”, and the garden’s boundary runs along the opposite pavement. Several travel pages place the tea room inside the garden, which sends people through the wrong gate.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

There are two doors, and they are not interchangeable. 39 rue Geoffroy-Saint-Hilaire<\/strong> is the commercial entrance for the tea room, restaurant and hammam. 2bis place du Puits-de-l’Ermite<\/strong>, around the corner, is the visitor entrance to the mosque itself. Walking to one when you wanted the other costs about five minutes.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

What are the opening hours?<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Each of the four things at this address keeps its own schedule, and only the restaurant takes bookings. The tea room has the longest day, running from 9:00 to midnight without a break, every day of the year.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The mosque closes to visitors on Fridays, the main congregational prayer day, and on Muslim holidays. The tea room, restaurant and hammam stay open on Fridays, because they are not part of the visit route.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Is the hammam open to men or to women?<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

The hammam is reserved for women only.<\/strong> The operator states this plainly on its own hammam page: “Le hammam est exclusivement réservé aux femmes.” There is no men’s day and no men’s session. A number of English-language guides, including an earlier version of this page, described it as men-only or as alternating by day, and that is wrong.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Two more rules matter before you go. There are no reservations, so you queue and pay at the desk. And the minimum age is 12, with the operator noting that proof of age may be requested at reception. The hammam covers 550 square metres, which the operator describes as the largest in Europe.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Is the Grande Mosquée de Paris open to non-Muslims and to tourists?<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Yes. The mosque sells tickets to the general public regardless of faith, and the visit is either self-guided or with a guide. Visitor hours are 9:00 to 18:00 every day except Friday and Muslim holidays, and the ticket is bought at the door.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Tickets are €5 full price and €3 reduced<\/strong>, the reduced rate covering children, students and groups of ten or more, with accompanying carers admitted free. Many guides still quote €3 and €2, which were the earlier rates; the mosque’s own visitor page now lists the higher figures.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The ticket covers the visit route: the prayer hall under its carved cedar dome, the 33-metre minaret, the cedar-panelled library, the marble Grand Patio with its zellige mosaic, and the Cour d’Honneur, where a gallery leads to the tomb of Kaddour Ben Ghabrit, the mosque’s first director from 1926 to 1954, and to two marble plaques commemorating Muslim soldiers who died for France in the two World Wars. You do not need this ticket to sit in the tea room or eat in the restaurant.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Is there a dress code?<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Neither the mosque nor the restaurant operator publishes a written dress code. The tea room and restaurant are ordinary commercial spaces with no stated requirements. For the mosque visit itself, the building is an active place of worship, so covered shoulders and knees are the sensible default, and shoes come off in the prayer hall.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Note the distinction, because it is where most confusion starts: the courtyard you photograph over a glass of tea is a café terrace, not a prayer space. The prayer hall is on the visit route, behind a separate entrance, and normal mosque etiquette applies there.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

How do you get to the Mosquée de Paris?<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

The closest metro is Censier-Daubenton on line 7<\/strong>, a short walk from the door at 39 rue Geoffroy-Saint-Hilaire. The operator also lists Gare d’Austerlitz on lines 5 and 10, which is about ten minutes on foot around the back of the Jardin des Plantes.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

What is on the menu, and what does it cost?<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

The tea room serves mint tea and pâtisseries orientales; the restaurant serves North African main courses. The operator’s published tariff prices a glass of thé à la menthe at €2<\/strong>, which is the one food price it states in writing anywhere on its site.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

On the tea room side the pastry counter runs to cornes de gazelle, baklawa, makrout and almond-and-honey cakes. On the restaurant side the operator lists couscous, tagines, grillades, pastilla and keftas, served across 450 covers in indoor salons and an outdoor courtyard. Individual dish prices are not published on the website; the current carte is shown in the restaurant and through the operator’s online ordering page.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

One practical note that catches people out: the tea room takes no reservations and the restaurant does. If you want a guaranteed table for lunch or dinner, book the restaurant; if you only want tea and pastries, walk in.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Why does the mosque matter, and what happened in 2026?<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

The Grande Mosquée de Paris was inaugurated in 1926 as France’s tribute to the thousands of Muslim soldiers who died fighting for the country in the First World War, which makes 2026 its centenary year. The mosque closed to visitors on Monday 13 and Wednesday 15 July 2026 for the centenary celebrations.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Architecturally it is Hispano-Moorish: white domes, a 33-metre minaret, zellige mosaic, hand-worked stucco and ceramic in the Grand Patio, and a roof of wood and emerald tiles. The minbar, the pulpit from which the imam delivers the Friday sermon, was a gift from King Fouad I of Egypt. That decorative programme is why the tea room courtyard photographs the way it does; the tilework is part of the same building campaign.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
