Église Notre-Dame-de-l’Assomption: Discovering the Oldest Parish Church in Paris

Located in the 17th arrondissement of Paris, Église Notre-Dame-de-l’Assomption is a Roman Catholic church that dates back to the 13th century. It is the oldest parish église à Paris and the only one to have been built in the Middle Ages, making it one of the oldest churches in France.

Built on the site of a Roman temple, the church has a fascinating history. Its original building was destroyed by fire in 1680, and the current building was constructed in 1708 to replace a chapel that was built in 1480.

Despite being surrounded by a cemetery, Église Notre-Dame-de-l’Assomption was the only church in Paris to be spared during the French Revolution. In fact, it was officially made a parish church in 1793 and later designated as a national monument in 1809.

Stepping inside the church, visitors are transported back in time. The interior is adorned with beautiful stained glass windows, intricate carvings, and stunning frescoes. It’s easy to imagine the faithful of centuries past gathering in this sacred space to worship and reflect.

Beyond its historical significance, Église Notre-Dame-de-l’Assomption is also a place of peace and contemplation. Whether you’re a devout Catholic or simply seeking a moment of quiet reflection, this church is a must-visit destination in Paris.

So next time you’re exploring the city of lights, be sure to make a stop at Église Notre-Dame-de-l’Assomption. You won’t regret it.
