Avoiding the Tourist Traps: Your Guide to Non-Instagrammable Paris

By Black Bear Media March 6, 2026 (Updated June 29, 2026)

March 6, 2026 by Black Bear Media

Hey there, fellow travelers! So, you’ve decided to skip the crowds and venture into the real Paris—the hidden gems, the off-the-beaten-path spots that aren’t plastered all over Instagram or the latest Netflix series? You’ve come to the right place!

Let’s face it, we all love a good photo op, but if you’re more into cozy cafés and quiet streets than the hustle and bustle of tourist hotspots, this guide is for you. Here are some places you might want to steer clear of if you’d rather find yourself sipping a latte in a cute corner brimming with locals instead of snapping pics in front of the Eiffel Tower.

Table of Contents

  • 1. Eiffel Tower
  • 2. Champs-Élysées
  • 3. Sacré-Cœur Basilica
  • 4. Louvre Museum
  • 5. Notre-Dame Cathedral
  • 6. Disneyland Paris
  • 7. Seine River Cruises

1. Eiffel Tower

Yes, I said it! While it’s the monument everyone says you must see, you’ll find that the chance of being elbowed by a hundred other tourists while trying to capture the perfect shot is pretty high. If you want a stunning view of this iconic landmark without the hassle, try Montparnasse Tower or even the Parc de Belleville. Trust me, your Instagram won’t miss it!

2. Champs-Élysées

Champs-Élysées with heavy traffic under clear skies. The Arc de Triomphe stands at the end of the tree-lined avenue, creating a lively urban scene.

Renowned for its luxury shops and historic significance, the Champs-Élysées is a sea of tourists trying to snap a photo with the Arc de Triomphe. Instead, why not explore the charming streets of Saint-Germain-des-Prés or the quaint shops in the Marais? You’ll discover artisan boutiques and quaint cafés that offer way more character than any chain store.

3. Sacré-Cœur Basilica

The Basilica of the Sacré-Cœur in Montmartre, a stunning white domed church overlooking Paris, surrounded by lush greenery.

While the Basilica itself is stunning, the crowds tend to pour in from every direction, especially at sunset. Instead, get lost in the nearby streets of Montmartre—there’s a wealth of hidden artists, local cafes, and a much more peaceful vibe. Plus, you might stumble upon a charming little bistro or an art fair!

4. Louvre Museum

If you’re not visiting Paris to see the Mona Lisa (and let’s face it, you’d have to jostle through a crowd to catch a glimpse anyway), skip the Louvre. For art lovers, I suggest the Musée de l’Orangerie or the Musée Rodin. These spots are lesser-known but house some incredible pieces, minus the throngs of selfie-takers.

5. Notre-Dame Cathedral

Ah, the beautiful Notre-Dame—it’s a must-see… unless you can’t stand the idea of lines wrapping around the block. Instead, you can enjoy a peaceful stroll along the Seine and pass by the stunning Sainte-Chapelle, where you can admire beautiful stained-glass windows without the hefty crowd.

6. Disneyland Paris

Let’s be honest, if you’re looking for the authentic Paris experience, you might want to avoid this one. It’s a fantastic park, don’t get me wrong, but it’s not the city’s heart and soul. For a day out, how about exploring Jardin du Luxembourg or the beautiful Canal Saint-Martin? Pack a picnic and enjoy some fresh baguettes!

7. Seine River Cruises

They might seem romantic and offer great views, but these cruises often come with a hefty price tag and too many tourists packed in. Instead, grab a bottle of wine and head to a park by the river. You’ll get the views with none of the fuss—and a much better chance to connect with the true Parisian vibe.

In conclusion, Paris is overflowing with character beyond these social media hotspots. Get out there, get lost, and embrace the underrated beauty that this incredible city has to offer. Happy wandering!
