Did you know that Paris has a museum dedicated to indigenous arts? Located on the banks of the Seine, in the 7th Arrondissement, the Musée du Quai Branly – Jacques Chirac showcases 3,500 works of art from Africa, America, Asia, and Oceania. It was first opened to the public on June 19, 2006, and has been one of the most visited museums in Paris ever since.
Its impressive architecture was designed by French architect Jean Nouvel, who also designed famous buildings like Kansai International Airport and Cité de la Mode et du Design de Saint-Etienne Métropole in France. The building is stunning—it looks like a stack of wooden boxes from the outside, but it’s very modern and clean inside!
The main reason to go there is the incredible art collection, which focuses on non-European cultures—a good break from all the European art and history. Each room has its theme, and there are pieces from worldwide that you don’t usually see in other museums.
The museum also has an outdoor garden, which is beautiful during the warmer months. It’s still worth a look in the colder months, though, as it’s pretty stunning at night with all the lights and water features. As a bonus, there are many tourist shops and restaurants nearby.
